Mike got the thrill of a lifetime when another Scoutmaster's plans suddenly changed. The Scouts could not be disappointed.  Another qualified Scoutmaster must  be found!  Fortunately for the Scouts, Mike was trained, qualified, conditioned, and available.  The Air Force allowed Mike free time off to support the Scouting Program, provided a van, fuel, food for the Scouts, and the long planned high adventure trek was saved!  Mike's grin still hasn't faded since 1988, Philmont's 50th anniversary.

The united states marine corps welcomes you to Boot Camp

  • The first challenge of becoming a Marine was forming up at the San Diego Airport.
  • Drill Instructors met us at assembly points and gently guided us into Cattle Cars, semi-truck trailers, to Boot Camp.
  • The shock grew every moment, out of the trailers & onto the "Yellow Footprints" eyes locked!
  • Thus begins the uncomfortable process of earning the title of  "U. S. MARINE."

Boot Camp June 1969 Drill Instructors:  SSgt Parker, SSgt Donnellan, & Sgt O'Reilly.  Platoon 2105, meanest bunch of recruits to hit the "Yellow Footprints"  at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. We were nothing but teeth & toenails.

the united states marine corps - visit to okinawa, japan

Finally getting orders to Vietnam, I'd expected a direct flight.  Life as a Marine is full of surprises.  Mine was when a squad of Marines boarded my '707 when we landed to refuel.  I became the victim of a "press gang," Yanked off my jet & put to work at "Force Logistics Support Section, Camp Foster."  "Request Mast:" asking your commander for a favor, orders to Vietnam  again!  Success, right after NCO School, Camp Smedley D. Butler. (one VERY decorated MARINE!)
